چکیده

Brock, Thomas D. (Indiana University, Bloomington), Barbara Peacher, and Deborah Pierson. A survey of the bacteriocines of enterococci. J. Bacteriol. 86:702-707. 1963.-A survey has been made of bacteriocine production by a wide variety of well-characterized strains of group D streptococci. On the basis of spectrums and sensitivity to chloroform, heat, and proteolytic enzymes, five distinct bacteriocines can be defined. Type 1 is produced by all Streptococcus zymogenes (S. faecalis var. zymogenes) strains, is active against a wide variety of gram-positive bacteria, and is also a hemolysin. Type 2 is produced by some S. liquefaciens (S. faecalis var. liquefaciens) strains, and acts on many enterococci as well as on certain other lactic acid bacteria. Type 3 is produced by certain strains of both S. faecalis and S. faecium, and inhibits a wide variety of group D streptococci, but is inactive against all other lactic acid bacteria tested except Leuconostoc citrovorum. Type 4 is produced by certain S. faecium strains and resembles in certain ways the type 3 activity, but differs from it in other ways. Type 5 has been found to be produced by only one proteolytic strain of S. zymogenes, and this bacteriocine has a very narrow spectrum. The strain that produces this bacteriocine also produces type 1 activity. No strain is sensitive to a bacteriocine of the type it produces.

Glyphosate suppresses the antagonistic effect of Enterococcus spp. on Clostridium botulinum.

During the last 10-15 years, an increase of Clostridium botulinum associated diseases in cattle has been observed in Germany. The reason for this development is currently unknown. The normal intestinal microflora is a critical factor in preventing intestinal colonisation by C. botulinum as shown in the mouse model of infant botulism. Numerous bacteria in the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) produc...

Production of Bacteriocines by Group a Streptococci with Special Reference to the Nephritogenic Types

Colicinelike substances, bacteriocines, are produced by many strains of Group A and non-Group A streptococci. Bacteriocines were detected by their inhibitory action on the growth of 2 Group A strains which served as indicators. Streptococcal bacteriocines were demonstrable on agar plates only if the bacteriocine-producing strain and the indicator lawn were alive and actively growing. The inhibi...

Characteristic of bacteriocines and their application.

Bacteriocines are small peptides with anti-bacterial properties. They are produced both by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Until now, a few hundred bacteriocines were described. Classification of bacteriocines undergoes continuous alterations, as new developments regarding their structure, amino acid sequence and recognised mechanism of their action are available. Some of bacteriocins...

Studies of the Relationship between the Production of Bacteriocines by Group a Streptococci and Acute Glomerulonephritis

The previously reported relationship between nephritogenicity and bacteriocine production among Group A streptococci has been examined. Using techniques comparable to the earlier study, the present study did not reveal any such relationship. Among 73 strains tested, 53% produced bacteriocines; no significant difference was noted between bacteriocines from strains isolated from cases of nephriti...
